After some teasing last week, today Microsoft announced the new Nokia X2, the successor to Nokia’s debut Android handset, the Nokia X. The handset is still very much targeted at the budget end of the market, with a price tag starting at just €99. We weren’t overly impressed with Nokia’s first foray into the world of Android, but perhaps our little complaints have been addressed with the Nokia X2.

Hardware specs have received a slight bump, which should result in a smoother experience this time around. The Nokia X2 has a slightly larger 4.3 inch LCD display, an improved 1GB of RAM, up from 512MB previously, and a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor. The handset also comes with a 5MP rear camera complete with LED flash, the same 4 GB internal storage limit, MicroSD expansion slot, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 1,800 mAh battery. The X2 now also comes with dual-SIM support.

One of the biggest complains about the old handset was that some users were finding it difficult to navigate around the interface. This time around, Microsoft has included a home key, to take the user back to their home screen, and the familiar back button. Holding the home button down also now brings up the multi-tasking screen, just like a regular Android handset.

Speaking of software, the forked Android OS remains with the Nokia X2, offering up a Windows Phone inspired user interface with the benefit of having the complete collection of Android apps at your fingertips. Multiple Microsoft apps and services come pre-installed, including Outlook, OneDrive, Skype and some Xbox games. Customers will also receive 15GB of OneDrive storage for free.

The Nokia X2 comes in your choice of glossy green, orange, and black, with glossy yellow, white and matt dark grey set to complete the range at a later date. The handset is already available from just €99 in select countries around the world.
