Microsoft is reportedly looking to bring Xbox Live to Android and iOS, possibly bringing achievements and cross-platform play to more smartphones and tablets.
According to The Verge, Microsoft is looking to expand the service to more platforms. The company recently hinted at its plans to expand Xbox Live in a job listing that was looking for developers to join a team that “will create a modern framework that is open-source, lightweight, extensible and scalable across various platforms including Windows Store, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android.”
Microsoft has already experimented with bringing Xbox Live to Android and iOS with its Wordament game that’s currently available in the Google Play Store. Wordament is an Xbox Live-enabled word game that lets players compete against others on multiple platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and Xbox. That game comes straight from Microsoft, though, so it’s not surprising that it interacts with the service.
Microsoft’s plans to bring Xbox Live to Android and iOS will include a lightweight tool that developers can use in their apps or games to interact with the service. The company will also give developers more freedom and fewer restrictions when implementing the service.
Google already has Google Play Games for Android which has some features similar to Xbox Live. And Apple has Game Center on iOS. Microsoft will have to compete with both, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If nothing else, it will mean the Android users who also have an Xbox One will have another way to boost their Gamerscore.
